HARDCORE 81….. DOA
My opinion is only my opinion, but in the short time I spent on the internet searching Hardcore punk rock I was quickly discugsted with what I saw and heard! I am talking about the music stuff, not the porn stuff!! I was hoping to find some sort of description of this offshoot of punk rock. What I found was a bunch of rich kids playing some sort of generic music that contained no energy for me.. remember this is only my opinion, and it ain’t worth shit… So I’m not even going to try to describe what Hardcore is today.
In about 1982 I purchased a record by a band called D.O.A., this record was called Hardcore 81. What a fuckin great album and if you don’t own a copie you better get it! Or I could tape it for ya… What energy! What power! It’s real! This is Hardcore!!!
As I stood in the crowd watching this amazing band, watching Joey Shithead belt out his cow face vocals and buzz saw guitars, Randy Rampage with his tattoos and amazing rock star stances and bass playing jumps, and the unbelievable Chuck Biscuits on drums…. Chuck went on to play with all the top bands of this genre, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Danzig, and social Distortion, and this is because he is the TOP drummer!!! Seeing Chuck drum is something everyone should do before they die, I do mean everyone- including your grandmum! Enough of the praise… and back to the show. D.O.A strummed the first cords to the song “Fucked up Baby” and my body was uncontrollably flying around the dancefloor!
The speed of the music was what was different from the usual punk music. It was fast, it was energy… and I feel it opened a few doors for millions of young punks across the country. In my home town there was a band called the NEOS. These guys decided they had a bunch of energy and a few ideas on some of the worlds wrong doings. They picked up some instruments and wrote some songs and played some live shows with other… shall we say more talented bands. They were always the first band on and played with all their intense hearts. They found a 4-track recording machine and recorded a bunch of their songs. They were incredible and the average length of their songs was about 30 seconds to a minuite. This super-fast style of punk rock was what was called hardcore. (written 1999 Ricky)
